It appeals to the masses, and while that may be a no no for some gamers - that doesn't make it a bad game. Overall, Call of Duty: Black Ops has a fun multiplayer component and a decent campaign. Yes, the multiplayer is, in a word, awesome!

Add to that, a huge amount of customization and new stuff, like face paint, gun camo, custom game modes, wager matches, and much much more. And boy does it deliver - almost all of the unbalanced crap from mw2 is gone - super ranged shotguns, quick scoping, unfair perks, and superhuman grenade launchers of death - all of that has been eliminated. Of course any COD fan would recognize that the multiplayer is the most important part of this franchise. The controls are tight and responsive, the set pieces are awesome, and the general level of polish is high. The storyline is relatively short, but I would say that the story is the best of any Call of Duty game. I'm not suggesting that sales equals quality - i'm just saying that if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

There are way better and more inventive shooters out there, but Treyarch nows that as long as you stick to one formula that works - people will buy it (as evidenced by it's sales). It doesn't try to reinvent the genre, it just tries to be fun.
